Seven Night Okavango - Kalahari Exploration

This safari is a winning combination of permanent water and abundant resident wildlife in the Okavango Delta through to the vast beauty and deafening silence and stillness of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

Despite the Kalahari’s vast size (around 10% of Botswana) the CKGR receives relatively few visitors making this destination especially unique. Famous for its black maned lions this area is also excellent for cheetah sightings amongst many others. This area is one of Andrew’s favourite places to visit.

Day one

You will be met by an air charter representative at Maun Airport and put on a plane to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

Andrew will meet you at the bush airstrip and your safari begins!

We take a slow game drive back to the camp taking in the landscapes and game on the way. On arrival in camp you will be given an orientation before a three course dinner by the camp fire!

Day two

We arise early before the sun in order to have the best chance to see nocturnal animals such as lion and leopard before they lie down to rest for the day. Morning game drive is at a leisurely pace toward the best game viewing and photographic experience. As it gets hot we return to the camp for a great bush lunch and time for siesta and relax.

After high tea we take to the game viewer again and head out to watch the sunset and pick up some Kalahari specials such as Black Backed Jackal and Bat Eared Fox.

Day three

Today we will go on a day trip to explore as much of this huge park as possible. Again we rise early and after breakfast we head out with a delicious packed lunch for the day. Exploring the giant fossil river beds and pans is exciting, especially when you encounter more Kalahari specials such as Gemsbok, Springbok and Cheetah.

After a long day in the veld we will head back to camp to have a bush shower and another great meal before bedtime!

Day four

Everyone is up early for one last spin around the desert before we head to Makgadikgadi. The amazing team of local staff stay behind to put down the camp and head to the Delta while we drive out of the CKGR and drive to Meno a Kwena Lodge.

We arrive in time for a late lunch and take in the beautiful view from the camp swimming pool. A leisurely afternoon is spent watching elephants drinking along the river!

Day Five

This morning we spend some time walking with the first inhabitants of the Kalahari – the Bushman or San people. A fascinating guided stroll reveals some of the secrets of the San. Survival and traditional hunting techniques are discussed and the almost mythical tracking ability of the Bushman witnessed.

We then set o for the Okavango Delta – passing through the safari village of Maun for lunch. It is a 3 hour drive into the swamps.

Here we meet up with the team again as you discover your camp set up exactly the same 200kms away!

Day six

It’s back on game drives to find those elusive predators. In the Khwai area of the Okavango it is possible to encounter lion, leopard and wild dog as well as many elephants.

We spend the morning exploring and taking photos before heading back to camp for some time out, lunch and siesta.

In the afternoon we head out once more and after a drive around we wait for the magical sunset and have a traditional ‘sundowner’ drink or two!

Day Seven

On this last full day we explore the Okavango by foot and Mokoro. After the early morning drive we find a good area to stretch our legs after all the driving. On a game walk you experience what it was like for our ancestors to walk along side all the great animals of the bush!

In the afternoon we head out to go on a ‘Mokoro’ trip. You will be guided by a local polar who will tell you about his unique interpretation of the Delta. A truly relaxing way to experience the Okavango.

Back at camp it is time for our last fireside tale and scrumptious three course supper of the safari! A time to reflect on everything we have seen.

Day Eight

Our last morning is not wasted and the final game drive after breakfast to the airstrip will hopefully reveal a few of those last ticks we have been looking for! Whether it’s birds or just the big mammals you wish to see this will be our last chance!

At the airstrip you will be picked up and treated to a scenic ride back to Maun for your international connection home.
